Free knitting pattern – knitted moustaches

**Update hopefully the row numbering is ok now :)**

A while ago I posted a picture of a moustache which I had been working on, and since I have made many more moustaches, and so here is the pattern…

Knitted moustache pattern

What you will need

Some brown (any colour will do really, it just depends on what colour moustache you would like) double knitting weight wool

3 3.5mm double pointed needles (you could also use 4mm or 3.75 but these would give a looser stitch and so you may be able to see your stuffing through the stiches) I knit these on the round, but because there is such a small number of stitches I only use three needles.

Here we go…

Cast on 3 stitches onto one needle

Row 1 – Kfb x 3 (6sts)

Row 2 – Knit, and as you knit this row split the stitches onto 2 needles

Row 3 – K2, kfb, kfb,k2 (8sts)

Row 4 – K

Row 5 – K3, kfb, kfb, k3 (10sts)

Row 6 – Kfb, k8, kfb (12sts)

Row 7 – (Kfb, k4, kfb) x 2 (16sts)

Row 8 – Kfb, k 14, kfb (18sts)

Row 9 – (Kfb, k7, kfb) x 2 (22sts)

Row 10 – Kfb, k20, Kfb (24sts)

Row 11 – K10, k2tog tbl, k2tog, k10 (22sts)

Row 12 – K2tog, k18, k2tog tbl (20sts)

Row 13 – (K2tog, k6, k2togtbl) x 2 (16sts)

Row 14 – K2tog, k12, k2tog tbl (14sts)

Row 15 – (K2tog, k3, k2tog tbl) x 2 (10sts)

You should now what looks like half of a moustache, and so stuff the first half of the moustache.

Row 16 – (K2tog, k1, k2tog tbl) x 2 (6sts)

Row 17 – (Kfb, k1, kfb) x 2 (10sts)

Row 18 – (Kfb, k3, kfb) x 2 (14sts)

Row 19 – Kfb, k12, kfb (16sts)

Row 20 – (Kfb, k6, kfb) x 2 (20sts)

Row 21 – Kfb, k18, kfb (22sts)

Row 22 – K10, kfb, kfb, k10 (24sts)

Row 23 – K2tog, k20, k2tog tbl (22sts)

Row 24 – (K2tog, k7, k2tog tbl) x 2 (18sts)

Row 25 – K2tog, k14, k2tog tbl (16sts)

Row 26 – (K2tog, k4, k2tog tbl) x 2 (12sts)

Row 27 – K2tog, K8, k2tog tbl (10sts)

Row 28 – K3, k2tog tbl, k2tog, k3 (8sts)

Row 29 – K

Row 30 – K2, k2tog tbl, k2tog, k2 (6sts)

Stuff the second half of the moustache

Row 31 – k2tog x 3

Break the wool, and pull through the remaining stiches to fasen off.

Sew on the two ends and ta-da! You are now the proud owner of a knitted moustache 😀

Some tips

Make sure that when you are on the three needles, that you keep the wool tight when you change from the 1st needle to the 2nd one, so that you don’t end up with holes on the side of your moustache, don’t worry if you do get holes, there’s nothing a bit of sewing can’t fix.

When I have them finished I am a fan of sticking them onto cut down, and painted with nail varnish, to make them even prettier.

But the possibilities are endless, hope that you have fun knitting, and if you take pictures, please feel free to send them to me and I shall feature them on the blog 🙂

You are welcome to knit these for your personal use, or to knit them for charity events, but if you do please link back to this post.

ps I think hippos look better with moustaches 🙂
